Description of Work

The North Carolina General Assembly is seeking a highly qualified Research Assistant to work in the Legislative Analysis Division. The nonpartisan staff of the Legislative Analysis Division provide legal analysis, policy research, general information, and legislative drafting services to committees and members of the General Assembly. Under general supervision, the Research Assistant will conduct policy and legal research for legislators, legislative committees, and legislative staff.  Work is reviewed for accuracy, completeness, content and methods. This position falls under the general supervision of the Legislative Analysis Division Director.

Examples of Duties:
  • Performs legal and policy research using various sources such as Westlaw, Lexis-Nexis, and Legisnet, bill status, statutory retrieval and library sources.
  • Drafts simple bills, resolutions, and amendments for a senior staff member.
  • Assists other professional staff in organizing, preparing and presenting information for legislators and committees.
  • Responds to information and reference questions from legislators, legislative staff and the public.
  • Reviews, proofreads and edits legislative documents.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Acrobat DC.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Practical knowledge of the elements of reference and policy research.
  • Ability to maintain composure and work cooperatively under pressure with legislators, legislative staff and the public on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work objectively and impartially both with respect to members of both political parties and with respect to issues of state.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended schedules.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and one-year research experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree and a paralegal certificate, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
